When I met Soluço for the first time, I was a 23 year old, recent college grad living in Guayaquil, Ecuador. How and why I made it down there to live for eight months is a little to complex for this post…another time. This experience in Ecuador was the beginning for me in a lot of ways- and it was also when I started training with Alliance. Getting to know professor Soluç0 was a privilege for me. At the time, he helped me realize the potential I had as an instructor and opened my eyes to the opportunities I had working with Jiu-Jitsu in Ecuador, eventually convincing me that there was more money in teaching BJJ than there was teaching English. In many ways, he changed my perspective on Jiu-Jitsu even though I had already reached the rank of purple belt, and had previously won three amateur MMA fights in a row. Fernando Di Piero, also known as “Soluço”, is an important figure amongst the Alliance Jiu-Jitsu team. The charismatic black belt has medalled in some of the world’s most challenging competitions such as the European Open and the Pan American, he has also been an important figure for the growth of Jiu Jitsu in the country of Ecuador where he has established himself and his academy.

Full Name: Fernando Di Piero
Nickname: “Soluço” means Hiccup in Portuguese. In martial arts it is common to release a shout (also known as Kiai) when doing explosive movements. When Di Piero started practicing martial arts, one of his colleagues used to say that his “Kiai” sounded more like a hiccup, thus the name.
